What Is a Structured Cap?
A structured cap has firm support behind the front panels. The crown keeps its shape even when the cap is not being worn.
That built in support can help embroidery remain stable, but the center seam and firm material still require a cap appropriate stitch plan.
What Is an Unstructured Cap?
An unstructured cap has a softer crown with less internal support. It can collapse when not worn and may move more in the frame.
Backing and careful hooping become especially important because the fabric itself provides less resistance to embroidery stress.
Why the Same File Can Behave Differently
A file with heavy fills or many overlapping stitch areas may seem acceptable on a firm structured cap but cause movement or puckering on a softer cap.
Underlay, density and compensation should be reviewed when the cap type changes significantly.
Backing Is Not a Replacement for Good Digitizing
Backing helps stabilize the crown, but it cannot correct a file that is excessively dense, poorly sequenced or badly compensated.
The strongest production result comes from combining appropriate backing with a cap specific digitizing plan.
Tell the Digitizer the Cap Style
If the logo is being digitized specifically for hats, provide the cap style or at least whether it is structured or unstructured. That information can affect how the file is built and tested.
