Short answer: Top thread loops or visible bobbin thread are usually signs that the stitch formation is not balanced. Threading, tension, needle, bobbin condition and machine setup should be checked before assuming the embroidery file is the cause.

Looping and Bobbin Show Are Different Symptoms

Loose top thread can form visible loops on the face, while excessive bobbin showing can mean the tension balance is pulling too much bobbin thread upward. The exact symptom helps narrow the cause.

Inspect both the front and back of the sew out rather than diagnosing from the top alone.

Check Threading and Tension First

Incorrect threading, a missed tension point or inconsistent tension can quickly change stitch formation. Bobbin insertion and bobbin condition also matter.

A known good design can help confirm whether the machine setup is producing the same symptom across multiple files.

Needle Condition Can Affect Stitch Formation

A bent, dull, damaged or unsuitable needle can interfere with the way the top and bobbin threads form a stitch. Changing the design will not correct a mechanical needle problem.

Needle choice should match the machine, thread and material being sewn.

Digitizing Can Add Stress in Specific Areas

Very short stitches, extreme density, repeated penetrations and difficult direction changes can make thread handling harder in one part of a design. If looping appears at the same location every time, inspect that stitch area.

If the symptom is random throughout the design, production setup is more likely to be involved.

Use a Simple Isolation Test

Run a known good file with the same thread, needle and bobbin. Then run the problem design on stable material. Comparing those results can separate a machine condition from a file specific condition.

Make one adjustment at a time so the result of each change is clear.
