Underlay & Stitch Density Guide

Proper underlay and density control ensure stable, professional embroidery. Learn how these factors impact stitch quality, texture, and overall appearance.

What is Underlay?

Underlay stitches form the foundation for top stitches. They stabilize the fabric, improve coverage, and reduce puckering.

Types of Underlay

Stitch Density

Density controls how tightly stitches are placed. Too dense → fabric distortion; too loose → poor coverage. Adjust density by material type and design size.

Pro Tip

For most satin stitching, use 0.40–0.45 mm density with underlay tailored to the fabric. Adjust for 3D puff or metallic threads.
