What Embroidery Backing Does
Backing is placed behind the garment to support the fabric while the machine stitches. It helps resist pulling, stretching and distortion.
Cutaway, tearaway and specialty products have different properties. Selection should consider fabric stability, design size, stitch count and how the finished garment will be used.
What Embroidery Topping Does
Topping is placed on top of the garment. Water soluble topping is commonly used on raised surfaces such as fleece, sweaters and terry cloth so fibers do not push through the embroidery.
After stitching, the topping is removed according to the product instructions.
Backing and Underlay Are Different
Backing is a material added by the production shop. Underlay is part of the digitized stitch file. Both stabilize the design, but they work in different ways.
A file with no useful underlay cannot always be corrected by adding heavier backing, and poor backing can still allow a well digitized file to distort.
Match Stabilizer to the Fabric
Avoid Treating Stabilizer as a Universal Fix
If a design is too dense, poorly sequenced or badly compensated, adding more backing can make the garment stiffer without fixing the root problem.
Troubleshooting should look at both the file and the production setup.
