How to Choose Embroidery Digitizing Software

Start With Your Machine and Native File Requirements

If you need native OFM files for a Melco workflow, DesignShop deserves special consideration because Melco documents OFM as its proprietary editable production format. If your workflow depends on native EMB, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio and Hatch both use EMB as an editable design format. Embroidery Legacy uses JDX as its native editable working file.

Do not choose software first and discover later that it cannot create or preserve the editable file your business expects. Machine files such as DST, EXP and PES are important for production, but they are not the same as keeping the native working file used to build and revise the design.

Decide Whether You Need True Manual Digitizing

Some programs focus mainly on lettering, editing or converting existing files. A full digitizer needs control over object shapes, stitch types, underlay, density, compensation, entry and exit points and sequence.

Check the exact product level because software families often sell several tiers.

Consider Who Will Use It

A full time professional digitizer and a home business owner may need very different interfaces, training and production features. More complexity is not useful if the user never needs the advanced tools.

Likewise, a simple package can become limiting if a growing shop starts receiving complex commercial work.

Check Operating System and Support

Confirm the current software requirements before buying. Some embroidery programs are Windows only, while others offer Mac or Linux compatible workflows.

Training, documentation, reseller support and update policies can matter as much as the initial feature list.

Keep Your Long Term Native Files in Mind

Native editable masters such as OFM, EMB and JDX can be important business assets because they preserve more of the design information used by their original software. Think about how you will archive, reopen and exchange those files years later.

Machine stitch files should still be saved for production, but they should not be the only copy when future editing, resizing or object level changes are important.
