What Makes an OFM Editable?
In DesignShop, Wireframe elements retain editable shapes and properties. Melco documentation gives examples such as stitch type, density and stitch direction. When the shape changes, the software can regenerate stitches based on those properties.
This is why a native OFM created during professional digitizing can be much easier to adjust later than a file made only from expanded stitches.
Wireframe vs Expanded Elements
Wireframe
Stores editable design structure and properties. Useful for changing shapes, sizes and stitch settings while retaining more of the original design logic.
Expanded
Stores the actual stitches rather than the original object properties. Editing may require direct stitch work or conversion.
Can Expanded Stitches Be Converted to Wireframe?
DesignShop includes a conversion process, but conversion should not be confused with recovering the original professional master. Melco warns that converting a professionally created expanded design may change original digitizing choices.
If a design needs important production changes, a digitizer should review the result instead of assuming that automatic conversion recreated the original object structure perfectly.
Why Shops Want Editable OFM Files
Embroidery businesses may keep native OFM files because customers return later asking for another size, another garment, a color change or a production adjustment. The native master gives the shop a better place to begin.
That does not mean every change is a simple click. Moving a design from a left chest size to a much larger jacket back size can require real digitizing changes. Small lettering, fills, density, underlay and stitch types may need to be rebuilt for the new size.
Version Compatibility Still Matters
Melco publishes compatibility information showing that OFM behavior can differ between DesignShop versions. Some older software may open newer files as expanded stitches rather than preserving all Wireframe information. For long term file management, shops should understand which software version created the file and keep original masters backed up.
What Should You Ask a Digitizer For?
If your business uses Melco DesignShop and future editing matters, ask whether the file will be supplied as a native OFM with Wireframe information where appropriate. Also explain the intended size, garment and production use so the design can be created correctly from the beginning.
If you only ask for a machine stitch file, the digitizer may reasonably deliver a format designed for production rather than future object editing.
